Abstract

This review examines Global Agendas and Education Reforms: A Comparative Study (Akgün & Alpaydın, 2024), a volume in the Maarif Global Education Series that explores the interaction between global educational agendas and national reform priorities across 11 countries. Through 15 chapters covering Africa, Asia, Europe, North America, and the Gulf region, the book analyzes how international frameworks promoted by organizations such as UNESCO, the OECD, and the World Bank influence educational policies, curriculum reforms, digitalization, artificial intelligence, and higher education internationalization. The volume demonstrates that while global agendas exert significant pressure on national systems, educational reforms remain shaped by local histories, political contexts, cultural values, and development priorities. The review highlights the book’s contribution to comparative and international education through its rich cross-national perspective and critical engagement with neoliberal reforms. It also identifies limitations, including insufficient attention to teachers’ perspectives, stakeholder experiences, and deeper theoretical, philosophical, and geopolitical analyses of educational changes
