Abstract

School leadership plays a vital role in shaping teachers’ commitment. Hence, this study aimed to investigate the influence of school principals’ and other school leaders' leadership behaviours on teachers' commitment in selected public secondary schools of the Central Ethiopia Region. A multi-stage sampling technique was used to select 212 sample teachers in this study. Both primary and secondary data were used to achieve the study's objectives. Multiple linear regression models and descriptive statistics were used to analyze data in this study. The multiple linear regression models showed that transformational and transactional leadership behaviours positively and significantly influenced teachers’ commitment in the selected secondary schools in the study area. Transformational leadership behaviour affects positively and significantly normative and continuance commitments while transactional leadership behaviour influences positively and significantly continuance commitment in secondary schools in the study area.  Thus, findings suggest that the Central Ethiopia Region Education Bureau, sample zonal education departments, and other stakeholders are advised to arrange leadership development initiatives such as training, coaching, workshops, and practical seminars, which update school principals on transformational and transactional leadership behaviours within their schools to promote teachers’ commitment in the study area.
