Abstract:
The use of artificial intelligence (AI) tools like ChatGPT has significantly impacted higher education, especially in enhancing students' cognitive abilities and academic engagement. This study explores the awareness of ChatGPT among postgraduate students of Sidho-Kanho-Birsha University, Purulia, focusing on differences in gender and residential background. A descriptive survey method was used, using both primary and secondary data. A sample of 150 students was selected through stratified random sampling, and data were collected using a self-constructed five-point Likert scale questionnaire along with unstructured interviews. Statistical techniques such as mean, standard deviation, and t-test were applied for analysis. The analysis indicates partial variation in awareness levels across gender under conventional significance thresholds, though such differences diminish under stricter criteria. Furthermore, awareness remains largely unchanged across residential backgrounds, indicating that location has minimal impact on students’ familiarity with ChatGPT. This study highlights the growing relevance of AI literacy in higher education and emphasizes the need for responsible and informed use of such tools. It reflects the integration of AI into the curriculum to enhance critical thinking, digital literacy, and cognitive skills.
